Despite the attempted tear-down of teachers by people like Chris Christie, and the glossy introduction of chartery takeovers in Camden and elsewhere, polling shows overwhelming support nationally for local schools, the teachers who work there, adequate funding for public education and healthy skepticism for high-stakes testing and overemphasis on teacher tenure.

A new organization, Democrats for Public Education  has launched, committed to supporting and defending public education as an “economic necessity, an anchor of democracy and a moral imperative” and a “fundamental civil right, without which none of our other rights can be fully realized.” The group, a 527 with 9 co-chairs including Donna Brazile and former Ohio governor Ted Strickland just released its first list of prominent Democrats across the country who are signing on.
